Every name has a line behind it.

Build one family tree with your relatives. You add the people you know, they add theirs. LinageRoot matches the records, joins the branches and names every relationship, seven generations back and across every marriage.

One tree for the whole family, however it's shaped.

  • Seven generations and beyond

From you to your 5× great-grandparents, and further as records allow.

  • Every marriage

Several spouses, past or present, each with their own children named correctly.

  • Two-family approval

Records join only when both sides agree, and any join can be undone.

  • Record Lens

Photograph a certificate or gravestone and LinageRoot reads the names, dates and places on it.

  • Royal and ruling houses

Titles, houses and birth order, with lines of succession under several rules.

  • Every culture and script

Matches names across spellings, alphabets, family-name-first order and calendars.

Made for real families, in every tradition.

Families don't fit one template. A grandfather with three wives. A mother known by her maiden name in one village and her married name in another. An adopted son. Cousins on four continents. LinageRoot records each of them as they are.

  • Customary, religious, civil and traditional marriages, including more than one at a time
  • Birth names, married names, praise names and spelling variants
  • Adoption, fostering and step-families, kept separate from the bloodline
  • Hometown, village and clan, for families spread across the world

How it works

  1. Start with your own name

Add your parents and grandparents, your brothers and sisters, and each spouse with the children you had together. A guided form walks you through it in a few minutes.

The start form, with a spouse and a child being added
  2. Your relatives add what they know

When a cousin in Lagos and an aunt in Houston both add the same grandfather, LinageRoot notices. Names, birth years and relatives must agree, and both families approve before the records join.

A match suggestion showing two records of the same man and the relatives that agree
  3. See the whole line

Everyone is labelled by how they relate to you. Tap any name to see their story, their family and, if they have shared it with you, how to reach them.

A family tree across six generations, with a father's two marriages

It knows the difference.

  • Half-sister
  • Stepmother
  • Co-wife
  • Paternal grandfather
  • First cousin once removed
  • Adoptive son
  • Sister-in-law
  • Co-mother-in-law
  • Great-aunt
  • Half-nephew
  • Stepmother's former husband
  • Second cousin
  • Maternal 4× great-grandmother

Every label is worked out from who is married to whom and which children came from which marriage. Where no single word exists, LinageRoot gives you the path: your mother's brother's wife's sister.

See it in 40 seconds.

Old photographs become a living line. A father's two marriages, each with its own children. Two relatives' records of the same grandfather, matched and approved by both. A sister's contact details, private until she shares them.

A 41-second tour: old family photographs lead to a present-day family; a family line grows up to seven generations; a father with two wives is shown with each wife's children labelled sister and half-brother; two relatives' separate records of the same grandfather are matched and approved by both; a sister's contact details stay private until she shares them.

Your family's data, protected wherever you live.

Family records are personal. Every member gets the same protections, in every country, built on the principles the world's data protection laws share.

  • Private by default

Relatives see your name and your place in the family. Where you live, your phone and your email stay hidden until you approve a request, field by field.

  • Consent before anything joins

Matching never merges records on its own. Both families approve, and every merge can be reversed exactly.

  • Your rights, one click away

See, correct, download or delete what is held about you, whenever you choose.

  • No ads, no trackers, no sale

No advertising or analytics scripts on any page. Your family's data is never sold.

  • Secure by design

Two-factor sign-in, private document storage and short-lived links. Certificates are checked by trained reviewers, not other members.

  • Safeguarding built in

Block anyone in one step. Report a record or an account, and trained moderators review it.

Questions families ask

Is it really free?

Yes. Building your tree, adding as many relatives as you like, profile pictures, matching and contact requests are free for ever. You only pay if you want an add-on, such as Root Gallery for a large photo archive or Origins & Heritage for reports and Root AI. In Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa you pay once for a month or a year, and nothing renews by itself.

How accurate is it?

As accurate as the family makes it, and built to stay that way. A child can have only one set of birth parents. A match needs more than a name: birth years and named relatives must agree, and both families approve. Relatives can confirm or dispute any record, and certificates are checked by reviewers.

My father had more than one wife. Can I record that?

Yes. Add each wife separately, in order, and add the children under the mother they belong to. Full brothers and sisters, half-siblings, co-wives and stepmothers are then named correctly for everyone.

What if a relative adds someone wrongly?

You can dispute it, which notifies the person responsible for that record. Only the person themselves, or the relative who added them, can change a record. A wrong merge can be undone.

Who can see my address and phone number?

Only people you approve. Before you join, only the relative who entered your details can see them. Once you join, you control them completely.

Can I record adoption and step-families?

Yes. Adoptive and foster parents are recorded as such, and step-relations come from marriages. None of them are mixed into the bloodline.

What happens to my data if I leave?

You can download it all first. Deleting your account erases your contact details, photo and notes. Your name stays in relatives' trees so their lines don't break, and you can ask us to remove that too.

Does it work for my country and culture?

Yes. Names, places, clans and marriage types are recorded as your family uses them. Matching understands spelling variants, titles, family-name-first order and names written in Cyrillic, Devanagari, Chinese, Korean and Arabic scripts.

Which data protection laws do you follow?

LinageRoot is designed around the principles shared by the major laws, including the GDPR, Nigeria's NDPA, South Africa's POPIA, California's CCPA and Brazil's LGPD. Every member gets the same rights: to see, correct, download and delete their data. The privacy notice explains the details for your country.
